Apostille Documents for Dual Citizenship

Dual citizenship refers to an individual who retains citizenship in their home country and also becomes a citizen of another country. The person holds the nationality of two different countries at the same time.

Not all countries accept dual citizenship. India does not allow it at all. Austria allows a person to seek citizenship in particular circumstances, such as being a survivor or decedent of a victim of the Nationalist Socialist regime, or if the individual has lived in Austria for 10 years, and the last 5 years have had a resident permit.

The United States allows dual citizenship but follows the ‘master nationality’ rule and only recognizes US citizenship – one situation of this means that if a person with dual citizenship joins the US military, this will automatically revoke the second citizenship.

If a country allows dual citizenship, be sure to learn all the rules and regulations that you are required to follow while in that country

Why Seek Dual Citizenship?

People may seek dual citizenship for various reasons:

  • Married a person from another country – when deciding where to live, the spouse may request dual citizenship rather than giving up their birth citizenship.
  • Travels often to that country – if someone often travels to the same country, they may ask for dual citizenship to make coming and going much more accessible—no visa, no standing in line, and no answering questions regarding the reason for the visit.
  • Seeking business opportunities – If a person wants to start a business, they often need to be a citizen of that country.
  • Own land – some countries will not allow individuals to own property if they are not citizens. Having dual citizenship enables the purchase of land or homes.
  • Investments – some countries offer citizen investment programs or residency by investment programs.

If you are interested in obtaining dual citizenship, contact the consulate for exact instructions and other required information.

Getting the Documents Apostilled

An apostille is a certification that identifies the authenticity of a document. All countries that are members of the Hague Convention of 1961 recognize the apostille as a form of authentication. Non-member countries require documents to be legalized through their embassy or consulate.

You will be asked to produce (and apostille) many documents including, but not limited to:

  • Birth certificate
  • Marriage certificate
  • Divorce decree
  • Death certificate of spouse, parent, or ancestor
  • Passport

We can help you obtain apostilles for all required documents.
