Having paperwork apostilled can be a lengthy process in itself, but if you reside in either the state of New York or New York City, authenticating your paperwork requires additional steps – and to shake things up a bit more… the process varies from New York State to New York City.
There are many steps to the authentication process. The first step for both apostille and legalization is to always receive the original or a certified copy of the document. For items such as a birth certificate, you must also obtain a Letter of Exemplification by the NYC Department of Health.
Next, you must present this paperwork to the County Clerk’s office for certification. Then, you will submit all documents to the New York Department of State for the apostille.
If your destination country requires legalization instead of an apostille, the next step is to have all documents submitted to the United States Department of State in Washington, D.C. The, the final step is to have everything sent to the Embassy or Consulate.
Each of the above steps requires your time and money.
