What is Attestation

You may understand that you need an apostille or embassy legalization for your destination country to accept your documents. But another level of screening may be required, and that is attestation.

Authentication Needed

When visiting a country outside the United States for work, school, or legal engagements such as a marriage, your documents will need either an apostille or embassy legalization (depending on your destination country).

But if you’re going to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), your paperwork will also require attestation.

Let’s say you have accepted a new job in the UAE and going there for work. You must present several documents to the UAE government before being allowed to begin working. Since the UAE is not a member of the Hague Convention, you must receive embassy legalization for the required documents.

Some paperwork required is:

• Birth certificate
• Passport
• Employment contract

Each document must go through several steps to be accepted as a genuine and valid document.

• Receive certification from the issuing department (state or federal)
• Legalization from the embassy or consulate
• Attestation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the UAE

Difference Between Apostille, Legalization, Notary, and Attestation

Apostille – the signatures and seals are confirmed by the distributing state or federal government and accepted by countries that are members of the Hague Convention of 1961.

Embassy legalization – the signatures and seals are confirmed by the distributing state or federal government and accepted by countries that are not members of the Hague Convention of 1961.

Notary – A designated person watches you sign the document and confirms that it is you and your signature.

Attestation – confirms the information contained within the document.
